Encounter and Transformation

Encountering people with unique ways of being

After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011,

I immersed myself in the world of social welfare,
a place I had long been drawn to,
so that I would have no regrets
about what I had left undone
before my own life came to an end.

It was a place where people
with diverse ways of being lived.

There, I encountered them,

and my world
began to fill with color.

They were people who needed support,
but at the same time,
they became teachers
who taught me so much.

They were vivid lights of individuality
that turned all of my previous values
upside down.

The beginning of our connection
was deeply memorable,
and even now,
it feels as though it happened yesterday.

By simply being,
they allowed others to become involved.

By simply being,
they gave rise to those who would support them.

By simply being,
they created opportunities for learning.

For them,
living itself was an act of expression.

The way they existed in the world
looked to me,
in every sense,
like that of true artists.

They possessed such strong
individuality and unique qualities
that enabled them to live as themselves,

and they appeared to me
as profoundly powerful beings.

Modern society has given those qualities
the name “disability.”

I came to understand
that this system was created,
in part, to protect them,

while at the same time
creating a boundary
between those who receive support
and those who provide it.

The world I encountered there
held within it harsh realities,

and yet,

I felt that it also carried
a warm light,
like sunlight filtering
through the leaves of a tree.

Through my relationships with them,

the many experiences I received
became vivid,

living colors.

And it was

an experience that touched upon a profound truth:

I am not alone.

Those colors
still shine and breathe within me,

and continue to transform
the light
into my own expression.

being

Is it a choice you make intentionally?

Into our eyes, into our ears,
in a world where immense amounts of information flow constantly.

To the images and sounds
that stream endlessly,
we are exposed without intention,
and our thoughts are gradually guided.

While believing that we are choosing
and acting for ourselves,
before we know it,
we may find ourselves being “made to choose.”

We take on values that conform to society,
and before we know it, we become bound by time, forgetting how to be with our own hearts, forgetting the will to choose for ourselves.

And when the mind and body
begin to speak,
only then
do we notice the discomfort within.

In a society where adults escape
and children lose hope,
individuality is crushed,
and even talent
comes to be seen as “a burden.”

When did we begin
to accept surrendering our inner voice
and leaving the answer
to someone else?

Why
do we find comfort in being “the same,”
and react to being “different”?

Where, after all, does the foundation
of what we call “right” come from?

I believe.

To be human
is to honor our own hearts,
and to choose with intelligence.

To be different
is, in essence,
perfectly natural.

Weakness contains strength,
and light dwells within shadow.

Were things we call opposites
ever truly opposites?

Is it not simply
that we are looking at
one aspect

from another perspective?

Difference does not create friction.
It is mutual respect
that gives rise to harmony.

When a person awakens,
there is often
pain as its catalyst.

Deep pain,
through the precious language of emotion,
can become a compass
guiding us back to ourselves.

To see the light within.

From there,
we return to ourselves.

And then, we create.

Through creation,
we return to our center.

Creation Brings Our Emotions into Balance

Is creation, at its core,

not a natural part of being human?

It is a quiet act of compassion,

carried out within,

in solitude.

“To imagine.”

Creation begins with imagination.

The time we spend creating

brings our emotions into balance

and becomes a source of strength

that sustains the heart.

My childhood was sensitive and highly perceptive,

filled with inner conflict.

Around the age of nine,

unable to sleep,

I would lie awake and cry alone

late into the night.

Those endlessly long hours.

By immersing myself in creation,

my emotions gradually came into balance,

and the emptiness I felt

slowly transformed

into a quiet form of self-regulation.

Even now, creation remains

a great pillar

that supports me.

How to Find the Light

To the small hearts

who, like I once did,

find themselves crying alone.

May you learn

to find the light

with your own hands.

It is okay to know

that what you see as a flaw

can become a strength,

to feel that what you call a weakness

may be a glimpse of your talent,

to understand that your unique qualities

are the raw stones

from which a radiant individuality can emerge.

May you find

many lights

within your heart.
